I've been seeing a lot of conversation on a recent video of a young woman assaulting a police officer.

The only thought that keeps running through my head is that it's hard for me to be anti-cop when I still vividly remember being on the phone with 911 and counting the seconds in my head, willing them to get here faster.

If you've only ever heard/read about situations where the police needed to be called, consider yourself lucky.

Now imagine being in that same position, but being terrified of the cops' arrival because you had experience and reason to believe that they might well take one look at you and decide you were part of the problem.

I'm not anti-cop. I am anti- cops abusing their authority.

Well, yes, I've never committed criminal assault. Or jaywalked right in front of a cop.

Do cops make me nervous? Yes-in that I do slow down if I pass a police car on the side of the road. But if one pulls up behind me, I also know to pull over and not take a swing at the cop because I'm afraid of getting a ticket.

Yeah, I've been arrested for calling the cops...it just taught me not to call them unless I seriously thought I'd die otherwise.

I bet you didn't fight with them either -- or blame them for fighting back when you grapple with them...

Nope, I argued a little bit- verbally, and contunially asked why it was happening. But I didn't struggle or resist. The whole thing was expunged later.

I'm anti- anybody abusing their authority, be it cops or CEOs or scoutmasters or church leaders.

Cops are people. People are flawed. They're in a position of authority, so it's their responsibility to handle that correctly, but they don't always do it. Not that I'm saying that should excuse it (certainly not!) but that people shouldn't make a blanket judgment based on some unfortunately bad apples.

Whatever else the cop in this particular video is, whether or not he is a bad apple otherwise, he did the right thing in this particular situation.

And usually the people who say that the loudest also complain the loudest when they don't get there quickly enough...

Agreed.

There *are* police abuses for sure -- but THAT wasn't one of them.

You have to realize that those people would be complaining if the cop did **anything** to her, yet he was obliged to deal with her...so why deal with people who have given all of 3 seconds of thought on the issue?
