No power last night from about 6pm until 3ish this morning.

I go to get coffee from the breakroom and come in to a conversation (damn near a debate) about flag burning. I don't have the energy for this.

So incredibly tempted to just walk out right about now.

What about flag burning? It's one of hte few respectful ways to dispose of an old flag.

Yeah, one of the drivers couldn't understand why flag burning was otherwise illegal (unless under those circumstances that the miltary performed).

See I don't think it should be. But it's not just the military that burnss flags. Actually I didn't know they ever did it. But it wouldn't surprise me. I have been to a private flag burnign cerimony. It was really nice.

Basically, if it's done according to ceremony, it's ok. Just arbitrarily torching it is not.

It's like the difference between taking a deceased loved one to the funeral home/crematorium and dousing the dead granny in accelerant in your backyard and lighting a match. One is respectful, one isn't (well, unless those were said relative's final wishes but a flag doesn't exactly have a voice in the same way).

I'm a big fan of railroad ties and kerosene, a la Vader's pyre in Return of the Jedi.

Just only for me, not Granny.

I don't think flag burning makes a great political statement. Burning an effigy of Bush, on the other hand, gets the point across quite clearly.

Besides, our flag doesn't pretend to be something it's not: it may be the clearest statement of our history and position in the world. We were derived from 13 colonies, showing how we began as a set of imperialist colonies... and then the stars show how we have carried on our own imperialist tradition, adding territory after territory, taking over previously native american sovereign nations.

For the current era, we just need to add a few droplet shapes to the star section of the flag, one for each war fought to protect oil interests.

Nah, wasn't annoyed.

I really don't have a strong stance on the topic of flag burning, it seems like both sides have a point.

I like how I heard someone put it once: There shouldn't be a law against burning the flag because when you have to have a law saying "respect this," it automatically removes the ability to truly respect it, because there can't be true respect without the potential of disrespect being available.
