Because the word "foon" doesn't have clear, unique sounds identifying both a fork and a spoon. The f and n are not the more important parts of those words in terms of recognition. "spo" and "ork" are enough to bring the words spoon and fork to mind, but "fo" and "on" are not.
Oh, go ahead and be logical about it. And here I was going to say that the Foon People from Planet Snrglarb threatened the Earth with 70-ft tall robot lawyers from space unless we changed it.
