Pastor had sex with daughters.

"The man told the court the sex was not about fulfilling his desires but about teaching his daughters how to behave for their husbands when they eventually married, as dictated in scripture....he was genuinely remorseful and had a good chance of rehabilitation as his wife and the church remained supportive."

Um...WTF is going on here? WHO THE HELL SUPPORTS AND FORGIVES THIS BULLSHIT? Did Jesus say "forgive them that fuck their 13-year old daughters, for they know not what they do?"

And here I thought purity balls were a fucked up concept (well, they are to me anyways but I partially attribute that to my lack of an unfucked up father figure).

The man will be eligible for parole in four years.

*headdesk*

Where as his daughters have been dealt a life sentence.

Good thing for him he's not in the American prison system or he might not make it out alive...

What frightens me even more is that his daughters may not realize that there was anything wrong.

Hmmm, purity balls huh? It actually sounds like a good idea to me. I am going with the thought that dad isn't some freak of nature. It sounds to me like the dad is taking responsibility for the actions of and behavior of his daughter. I wish more parents would do that. I think a commitment to abstinence for teens is a good idea, although idealistic. I didn't have sex until after I was 19 but it was more having to do with phobia of pregnancy than morals.

I have no problem with the idea of abstinence for minors/teens (if for no other reason than that they all look like children to me now--eek!), but I've always felt like that should be a decision someone comes to on their own, and not from parental pressure. Purity balls have the feel of almost obsessive hymen-worship.

Plus, there's no equivalent for teen boys. What gives?

Considering the fundie Christian bent to the custom, it doesn't surprise me a bit that it's all about making sure that girls stay pure (and not worrying about boys' purity.)

I read as much of it as I could stand, and two things stood out to me:

1) The fathers pledge to work on their own "purity" as part of this. Lead by example rather than "do as I say not as I do" is a good thing. There's a lot of statistical research on the social problems of girls raised without fathers. I can see the logic of be a better man to be a better father to have a healthier/happier daughter.

2) The girls silently pledge to go along with this idea by placing a white rose on an altar (regardless of what they call it.) Does this sound like giving up your voice to anyone? Because it creeped the hell out of me.

And as much as I hate to say it...Jesus was all about the forgiveness for any and everything if the person was sorry. Not just mouthing the words sorry, but genuinely repentant.

(1 John 1:9 KJV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

No matter what a Christian does, if they are repentant they are forgiven. No karma either. Yahweh apparently doesn't hold a grudge.

I find Christianity to be a very strange religion.

It may be in their book--but I find that rather strange indeed. Makes me wonder if that's what they meant...

If he'd actually read the Bible all the way through, he'd also have seen that God really frowns on incest.

I'd like to see "depravity balls" instead.
