So the other day I went in to pick up a couple of prescriptions.

I'd been hoping to get a couple months' supply to tide me over until I had insurance. So I get there and ask the pharmacist about getting an extended supply.

Her: "Are you going on vacation?"

Me: "nope, just going to be without insurance until November and was hoping to get a few months' worth of my meds."

Yeah, well, apparently the insurance company can't make an exception for that. Oops. I wonder how many people would have (or have) lied in that situation?

I gave it some thought today.

Yes, they may be crooked...but at the same time, wouldn't I technically be committing insurance fraud? And I may have to shell out more next month (I asked what my meds retailed for, so I can at least plan for it), but wouldn't lying indirectly hurt even more people?

I felt less guilty about getting my birth control covered for a "skin condition" (acne).

sure. but hey, when did was the last time that the illegality of an act was the sole preventative against you doing something?

Nah. Drug prices are artificially inflated as it is. If the health care industry wasn't ripping us off at every opportunity, then it wouldn't be a problem... but then there would be no need for insurance companies.

If no one can get Rich off of something, some rich guy will figure out how to get Richer.

I personally consider committing petty frauds against large corporations a Revolutionary act, but YMMV.

Plus, I can't lie with a straight face-my immediate thought was "yeah, right, because I can SOOO afford to take a three month vacation..."

I didn't "lie" exactly, but I did change the shipment dates of my meds from my mail order pharmacy. I get 3 month supplies of most meds sent to me, and I realized I was going to loose insurance in the middle of the 2nd month, so I called and had them change the dates so I would get a fresh supply right at the end of my coverage.

I lied. I was losing my army insurance after my first marriage ended and I needed my BC. I have PMDD which means I am psychotic during my period...get away with murder due to temporary insanity psychotic. I told them I was visiting my parents back in the states for six months. I got my BC and all my other meds. I also happened to know this really great, sexy, hot, brilliant medic who hooked me up after my supply ran out. He was so great I married him.

seconded.

Insurance doesn't play fair, why should you. Just think up your lie ahead of time, since you live in a glass face. :)

As a full-time student, I will be without insurance for a couple of years, unless some miracle happens in the meantime...and the - college student=poverty - situation means that I can go to the 'Planned Parenthood' clinic and actually get my BC for free!!! Yay for that!

Otherwise, I would prolly be in the LIE to the insurance company mode. I always made sure that I was up-to-date on any and all check-ups before I quit a job and lost insurance.

I would suggest consulting the prescribing physician about getting your prescription adjusted so you do not have to come in as frequently. Switch from monthly resupplies to quarterly resupplies. You can justify this as being more convenient and possibly saving you on co-pays. And I think that a doctor is someone that you can be honest with about the insurance policies, they are usually sympathetic to their patients' financial situations, and they get paid whether you or the insurance company is the one to pay for the medication in the interval.
